The Kireka Open Chess Championship 2025 (9th Edition) once again confirmed its status as one of the biggest and most influential chess events in Uganda and the region. Hosted at the Sports View Hotel in Kireka along the Kenya–Uganda Highway, the tournament transformed the venue into a true international chess arena, attracting players from seven federations across Africa and beyond, including South Sudan, Somalia, and Zambia. The strong international presence, combined with Uganda’s top talent, made this edition one of the most competitive in the tournament’s history.

The championship attracted elite players such as Zambian Candidate Master Zulu Thomas and Uganda’s leading competitors including Harold Wanyama, Haruna Nsubuga, Kawuma Patrick, Nyola Waswa Mark, and Kamoga Rajab. The tournament was officiated by a high-level arbitration team led by International Arbiter Kimera, assisted by Cynthia from Kenya, ensuring the highest technical standards throughout the event.

From the opening rounds, the competition delivered drama and excitement. Several early upsets set the tone, with top seeds falling to fearless underdogs, underlining the depth of the field. A unique highlight of the tournament was the bounty placed on Kireka Chess Club players by Munanira Isaac, a move that significantly spiced up the competition. The bounty inspired bold play, intensified rivalries, and directly contributed to a series of thrilling and unexpected results that kept spectators engaged throughout.

The Open section produced a historic performance by Ngong Samuel Gai of South Sudan, who dominated the field and won the tournament with a flawless score of 8/8. He sealed his victory in the final round against Nyola Waswa Mark, completing one of the most commanding performances ever seen at the Kireka Open. Gongthong Gong of kireka chess club finished second, while Musasizi Emmanuel secured third place. Joint fourth place honors went to Sonko, Nyola Waswa Mark, and Kamoga Rajab.

The Ladies section delivered equally exciting chess, ending in a tie at the top. The championship was decided by a tiebreak playoff, where WIM Sana Omprakash Kayyar of kireka chess club emerged as the winner. WFM Nakabob Peninah of kireka chess club claimed third place after a strong and consistent showing.

Strong performances were also recorded across the rating categories. Apollo Ahumuza of KTLC Chess Club dominated the U2000 category with an impressive 6/8 score, gaining over 77 Elo points in a single tournament. The U1900 category was won by Daahir Bashir of Somalia, continuing the strong international presence on the podium. The Best Player with Disability award was deservedly won by Mbaziira Wasswa Sharif of SOM Chess Academy, recognizing both skill and resilience.

The Junior tournament showcased the future of chess, with Tulinaye Osborn emerging champion in the Junior Open section, while Birungi Shekinah Adnah claimed victory in the Girls’ Junior section. Both junior champions were rewarded with laptops in recognition of their outstanding performances and potential.

Games from the championship were broadcast live on Lichess, allowing global audiences to follow the action and study several brilliant encounters from the event. The tournament was proudly sponsored by MTN Uganda and Manda Mobile, with players donning orange attire, making it one of the most visually striking and colorful chess events ever hosted in Uganda. Winners across all categories received cash prizes, trophies, and medals.

Special appreciation goes to Bob Were, patron of Kireka Chess Club, for his unwavering support, as well as the organizing committee led by Sanya Derrick and Kafuko John for delivering a professionally run and memorable championship. The President of the Uganda Chess Federation, Andrew Bakiiza, commended Kireka Chess Club for the excellent organization and reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting the continued growth of chess in Uganda.

Kireka Chess Club has once again cemented its position as the undisputed giant of Ugandan chess, winning the National Chess League for the 8th consecutive year. Competing in what is now officially recognized as the biggest and strongest chess league in Africa, Kireka’s dominance continues to inspire and shape the future of the sport on the continent.

With 57 teams, representation from Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan, and more than 500 games played, emerging victorious in such a competitive environment speaks volumes about Kireka’s structure and discipline

The chess Community

Kireka’s success is driven by exceptional leadership both on and off the board. Captains Kaddu Ivan, Sanya Derrick, Kafuko Paul, and Mukose Emmanuel have built a culture rooted in teamwork and consistency. Their guidance has kept the team disciplined, motivated, and tactically sharp throughout the season.

The club also recognizes the crucial role played by patron Were Bob, whose steady support and vision have built Kireka into a model club for Uganda and Africa.

This season, Kireka showcased unmatched depth, winning all three formats of the league:

Their second teams, including Kireka Panthers, also performed exceptionally, demonstrating the strength of the entire club—not just the top board.

Kireka Chess Club is proud to celebrate one of our own, Omprakash Sana Kayyar, who has put her name in African chess history with a great performance at the 2025 African Junior Chess Championship held in Cidade Velha, Cape Verde.

Representing Uganda and Kireka Chess Club, Sana clinched the silver medal in the Girls’ section after nine tough rounds, securing her first Woman International Master (WIM) norm. This landmark result not only confirms her place among Africa’s brightest young talents but also pushes her closer to crossing the 2000 rating mark, a record that would make her the highest-rated female player in East and Central Africa.

Her determination was on full display in the final round, where she held a critical draw against Algeria’s Ryma Nassr, sealing her podium finish. Throughout the event, Sana demonstrated the fighting spirit and resilience that has become her trademark, showing why she is both a national champion and a continental force.

Uganda’s Vice President Otim Isaac summed up the national pride in Sana’s achievement, stating:
“Sana is a fighter. Our continental champion. We are very proud of her!”

For us at Kireka Chess Club, her success is deeply personal. Sana has grown within our ranks, carrying the Kireka spirit of hard work, discipline, and excellence onto the continental stage. Uganda emerged as the standout nation of the tournament, winning 2 Golds, 2 Silvers, and 1 Bronze, and Kireka’s stars played a central role in this historic achievement.

At the heart of Uganda’s triumph were Candidate Master (CM) Shoubith Omprakash Kayyar and Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Sana Omprakash Kayyar, both products of Kireka Chess Club’s strong training culture and commitment to excellence.

  • CM Shoubith Omprakash Kayyar claimed the Gold Medal in the U2000 Open Section with a stellar 6/9 score, earning him the coveted Candidate Master title. His win underscores Kireka’s tradition of nurturing champions ready to conquer the international stage.

  • WFM Sana Omprakash Kayyar, the defending champion in the U2300 Women’s Section, continued her incredible form, scoring 6/9 to win Silver and a direct qualification to the 2026 World Amateurs Individual Chess Championship. Sana’s consistency and fighting spirit have made her one of Africa’s most respected female players.

Kampala, Uganda (Gloria Gardens Namugongo)— International Master Ssegwanyi Arthur reaffirmed his dominance on the regional chess scene by winning the 2025 Kireka Closed Chess Tournament in commanding fashion. Finishing with an impressive 8/9, Ssegwanyi secured the title with a round to spare, cementing his place as the number one player in East and Central Africa.

The Rapid Section of the tournament attracted a competitive field, with the highest-rated participant at 2326 and the lowest-rated participant at 1556. Despite the ratings, the intensity of play was high, and it served as a fertile ground for emerging players to test their mettle against more experienced opponents.

In the Blitz Section, FM Kawuma Patrick demonstrated his lightning-fast calculation skills to take the top spot. He was closely followed by Wanyama Harold, another prominent figure in Ugandan chess, while Sangalo Moris surprised many by finishing third. Despite a period of inactivity, Moris proved he still possesses the sharpness and instinct that once made him a feared opponent on the board.

The Best Female Player award went to Sana Omprakash, who showed consistency throughout the tournament. Her presence was a welcome reminder of the growing strength and participation of women in Ugandan chess.

Kireka Chess Club held a vibrant Victory Party on April 26th, 2025, at Gloria Gardens, Namugongo, to honor the club’s extraordinary achievements in recent high-profile tournaments. The celebration marked a historic moment: Kireka’s 7th Uganda National Chess League title, cementing the club’s status as the undisputed powerhouse of Ugandan chess.

The joyous gathering brought together club members, supporters, executives from the Uganda Chess Federation, and international well-wishers. The atmosphere was electric with celebration—filled with speeches, awards, music, and laughter—as the club paid tribute to a season of dominance and regional victories.

Kireka Chess Club once again cemented its status as a powerhouse in nurturing young chess talent, following a brilliant performance by three of its standout players — Asaba Juliet, Muhirwa Alvin, and Wabwire Ronald — at the prestigious 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championships, held from May 22nd to 29th in Mombasa, Kenya 🇰🇪.


🌟 Asaba Juliet – Golden Glory in U13 Girls

A true prodigy and pride of Kireka Chess Club, Asaba Juliet delivered a sensational performance in the U13 Girls category. Scoring a near-perfect 8/9, she was crowned African Champion, earning Uganda’s only gold medal at the event. Already the reigning Uganda Open Ladies Champion, Asaba’s dominance continues to inspire the next generation of female players. Her result qualifies her for the Conditional Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title upon reaching a 1900 Elo rating.


🥉 Muhirwa Alvin – Bronze in U15 Open

In the fiercely competitive U15 Open section, Muhirwa Alvin displayed exceptional resilience and tactical prowess. With a strong 7/9 score, he secured a well-deserved bronze medal, making him eligible for the Conditional Candidate Master (CM) title upon attaining a 2000 Elo rating. Alvin, long regarded as one of Uganda’s most promising young minds, continues to fulfill the high expectations set by his coaches and mentors at Kireka Chess Club.

The ever-consistent Ronald Wabwire proved why he was a category favorite in the U11 Open. Finishing unbeaten with 7.5 points, Ronald clinched the silver medal, showcasing maturity and composure well beyond his years. His performance also qualifies him for the Conditional Candidate Master (CM) title upon reaching a 2000 Elo rating.

Kireka Chess Club has once again proven its dominance in Ugandan chess, securing its seventh consecutive title in the prestigious Premier Bet Uganda Chess League 2024/25. This historic victory further cements Kireka’s position as the most successful club in the league’s history.

This season was truly exceptional, the largest in Africa, featuring teams from Kenya, Somalia, Mogadishu, and South Sudan. With 57 clubs and 700 players, including men, women, and differently abled players, the league showcased the true spirit of competitive chess across the region.

The final showdown saw Kireka Chess Club edge out Mulago Kings Chess Club and Soroti Chess Club, who finished second and third, respectively. Kireka’s triumph earned them a grand prize of UGX 10,000,000, while the second and third-placed teams took home UGX 2,000,000 and UGX 1,500,000, respectively. A total of UGX 24,000,000 was distributed among participating teams, ensuring broad support for chess development across the country.

The 2024/25 season was the longest in history, with fixtures suspended four times due to international engagements. Uganda Chess Federation President Emmanuel Mwaka praised the resilience of players and organizers, stating: “This was a tough but rewarding season. The inclusion of international teams made it even more competitive, and we are proud of the level of chess displayed.”

This season also witnessed the return of Makumbi Godfrey, widely regarded as the greatest Ugandan chess player of all time. Makumbi, who won gold at the 1996 Chess Olympiad, remains the only Ugandan to achieve such a feat, making his participation in this year’s league a moment of inspiration for young players.

  • Rapid Chess: Mulago Kings Chess Club took the top spot, followed by Soroti Chess Club and Kireka Chess Club.
  • Blitz Chess: Soroti Chess Club emerged victorious, with Gambit Chess Club finishing second and Mulago Kings Chess Club securing third place.

MATOVU ABEL VICTORS AS 2024 KIREKA OPEN CHESS CHAMPION- Showcases International Brilliance and Homegrown Talent

The 2024 Kireka Open Chess Championship, proudly organized and hosted by Kireka Chess Club, concluded in spectacular fashion on December 31st at Sports View Hotel, Kireka. This year’s edition reaffirmed the tournament’s reputation as one of Uganda’s premier chess events, drawing top-tier players from across East Africa and beyond, including South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, and Rwanda.

Spanning four days from December 28th to 31st, the event delivered thrilling encounters across all categories. After a dramatic tiebreak showdown, Matovu Abel emerged as the ultimate champion, finishing with an impressive 7/8 points. Despite a shaky start with a first-round loss, Matovu demonstrated unshakable resilience, defeating formidable opponents and clinching victory in the final tiebreak against FM Haruna Nsubuga, who also scored 7/8. Ngong Samuel Gai from South Sudan completed the top three with 6.5 points, edging out Ssonko Matthias on tie-breaks.

The Ladies’ Category was a fierce battlefield, eventually won by Nakabo Peninah with 6.5 points, showcasing both her strength and determination. She was closely pursued by WCM Ndirangu Joyce Nyaruai (Kenya), WFM Sana Omprakash Kayyar, and Kaloki Zuri (Kenya), each scoring 6 points. Ahereza Joan rounded out the top five with 5.5 points.

A major highlight of this year’s edition was the outstanding performance of junior players. Ahumuza Apollo and Ninsiima Patricia claimed top honors in the junior section, with several young participants holding seasoned players to drawn games — a clear testament to the region’s growing chess talent pool.
